Custom Shortcode – Popular Products

I wish to display the popular or best selling products in a separate row via shortcode above the main product page (with sidebar and search)

I tried adding a category called “popular” just to try it out. However, it also changed the main product list below it.

How do I just embed the popular ones or selected items without affecting the main product page items?
